DP Language A: Literature
Please find below an overview of the 4 parts of the course, which explains the number of works to be studied in each part, the assessment associated with it, and the percentage of the overall mark represented by that assessment:
At SL, students read 10 works
At HL, students read 13 works
Part 1: Works in Translation
Objective:
The study of works written originally in a language other than English.
Sources:
SL: 2 works in translation from Prescribed Literature in Translation list (PLT).
HL: 3 works in translation from Prescribed Literature in Translation list (PLT).
Assessment:
SL/HL: Essay: reflection (300-400 words) and literary essay (1200-1500 words).
This represents 25% of the course.
Part 2: Detailed Study
Objective:
In Part 2, the focus is on detailed analysis of a work.
Sources:
SL: Study of two works, each of a different genre, chosen from PLA.
HL: Study of three works, each of a different genre, chosen from the PLA.
Assessment:
SL: Individual Oral Commentary (10 mins) 15%
HL: Individual Oral Commentary (20 mins) 15%
Part 3: Literary Genres
Objective:
A group of works selected from the same literary genre is studied in depth.
Sources:
SL: Study of three works of the same genre, chosen from the PLA
HL: Study of four works of the same genre, chosen from the PLA
Assessment:
SL: Paper One: Guided Literary Analysis (1 hour 30 mins) 20%
Paper Two: Essay (1 hour 30 mins) 25%
HL: Paper One: Literary Commentary (2 hours) 20%
Paper Two: Essay (2 hours) 25%
Part 4: Options (in which works are chosen freely)
Objective:
Part 4 is designed to meet the interests and choices of the group.
Sources:
SL/HL: Study of three works freely chosen
Assessment:
SL/HL: Individual oral presentation (10–15 minutes)
This represents 15% of the course
